How Can We Disagree Without Being Disagreeable in the Era of Tweets, Texts, and Trump?

Dear friends,

We are living through incredibly challenging and polarizing times. Texts, tweets and Trump fuel rapid fire reactions and toxic discourse.  As a result, family members aren’t on speaking terms, discord exists in workplaces and the challenging issues of the day aren’t getting solved. The stakes are high.

It’s exasperating, but there’s hope.  With some strategy and practice, we can do better.

Thanks to our friends at The Rabble Pod, I had the opportunity to share tips for teeing up and executing difficult conversations more effectively. Tune in to the latest episode and subscribe!

HOT TIP:  REFRAME YOUR GOAL

Instead of trying to win a debate or change the other person’s mind, enter into the conversation with the intent to create shared understanding.  Where is the other person coming from and what values inform their perspective? Get curious, ask questions, invite wonder. By not making the goal about winning and focusing instead on establishing a SHARED UNDERSTANDING you may end up getting the outcome you really want.

So, invite some wonder & keep practicing.

P.S. Speaking of podcasts, last week Hidden Brain aired an old episode titled Deep Work, which digs into the impact email, texts and other technology have on our brain, our focus and our creativity. Literally, as I type this my cell phone text chimes and it’s all I can do to not stop what I’m writing to check it.  This frequent phenomenon has quite alarming impact for those who’s work product involves using their brains to think critically and create.
